The following list of websites is sorted by category (in alphabetical order) and then in the order of ratings. The list was compiled by the FAQ maintainer alone, and the reviews and ratings under each website are merely the personal opinions of the FAQ maintainer. Unrated sites appear at the bottom of each list. Sites may be unrated because the site has not been checked in detail, or the FAQ maintainer is not qualified to rate the website. Lack of a rating does not reflect on the website's content.
FAQ maintainer's review:
A huge bunch of information about the Japanese language, including lessons, names, calligraphy, kanji tattoos, etc., written in a readable style, by experts. See also 16.4. Internet forums for the corresponding forum. My only criticism of this site is that, like a lot of sites written by Japanese people, the articles tend to meander. Also, sometimes features flashing advertisements.
FAQ maintainer's review:
A huge collection of material available to all on the WWW. May take some rooting around, but there is a lot of useful stuff here.
FAQ maintainer's review:
A newspaper column about Japanese language from the Daily Yomiuri newspaper. Written by a Japanese teacher.Has a lot of information, but also tends to meander in a kind of tedious way, with lists of words appearing apparently just to fill up space.
FAQ maintainer's review:
A lot of information here, in amongst a lot of non-information.
FAQ maintainer's review:
Multiple language correction "forum" run by a company based in Japan. You write something in Japanese, or whatever language you might be learning, and native speakers correct it for you. In exchange you offer corrections to learners of your language.A very active site with a large community. The concept is a good one but I'm not sure how well it works in practice. The site's Ajax-based software works but is a little unpolished, with no facilities to edit one's answers or to add to other people's corrections.
If you are an English speaker, the volume of English material presented to you to correct is a little daunting. In addition, the English texts produced by the Japanese learners are often either crappy, with not even spelling checks applied, or boring.
FAQ maintainer's review:
Many "seldom-asked" questions are answered here, including several about language.
FAQ maintainer's review:
A very large site containing basic and advanced information on Japanese grammar. The web design is extremely nice and a lot of effort has gone into this guide. Can also be downloaded as a PDF.This site is often highly recommended in web forum discussions. It does have a lot of content, but I'm not 100% about the high ratings. The organization of several pages doesn't make sense to me. There are some good explanations of basic things, but on more advanced topics, too often the contents seem to consist of the first thing that has popped into the author's head, without really checking or thinking about it.
FAQ maintainer's review:
User-contribution based site on Japanese grammatical constructions.Like many other user-contributed websites, this presents a very large amount of disordered, random information. Pity the learner who has to select which parts of this are useful and which parts aren't. Be warned: lots of the pages on this site are poor quality. It may be fun for the people who made the site, but not really much use. Get a textbook instead.
FAQ maintainer's review:
Free online book about Japanese grammar, complete with commenting features. There are a lot of contents, but it's difficult to see who the book is written for. Like the Tae Kim guide, this book needs the help of someone with editing skills.
FAQ maintainer's review:
A newspaper column from the Japan Times, available online, focusing on the ins and outs of Japan's kanji writing system (see 1.2. Kanji).Written in a catchy, interesting way. Contains quizzes and background information hard to obtain elsewhere.
FAQ maintainer's review:
Amusing site with the goal of teaching you kanji. Be aware that sometimes this website has a loose relationship with the facts.
FAQ maintainer's review:
Kanji questions and answers (going into minute details) by the publisher of the Dai Kan-Wa Jiten.
FAQ maintainer's review:
Very long list of links to sites, with some reviews and information. Lots of information about computing and electronic dictionaries, contains general links about life in Japan, travel, tourism, etc. You can also submit your link here.
FAQ maintainer's review:
Links for Japanese learners and teachers. Some dead links but seems fairly high quality. Web pages are mojibaked (see 14.5. What is mojibake?) on modern browsers, so hand-switch to Shift-JIS.
FAQ maintainer's review:
Huge, indiscriminate list of links, many of which are dead. The words attached to the links are often not very helpful or even meaningful, some websites getting nothing more than just a number.
FAQ maintainer's review:
Hideous web design. Lots of links of variable quality.
FAQ maintainer's review:
Copyright-expired Japanese classic books free to download. Most works have furigana (see 1.3.3. What is furigana?).
FAQ maintainer's review:
A great idea for a website: a collection of photos of Japanese signs. Good if you want to see what real Japanese signs look like, and try reading them. Also contains a list of what the signs say. Photos are dark and not very high quality.
FAQ maintainer's review:
Has been on the web for more than ten years.
FAQ maintainer's review:
Origins of Japanese words explained.
Sites under the "teaching" category are for Japanese teachers. These sites are unrated, since FAQ maintainer is not a Japanese teacher & is not qualified to rate these sites. They are ordered by date of addition to the list.
FAQ maintainer's review:
Up to date list of links.
FAQ maintainer's review:
