Review of The Kanji Dictionary by Charles E. Tuttle catalogue
This revision of the classic reference text, Japanese Character Dictionary, makes the Japanese written language more accessible than ever before.
The Kanji Dictionary is the only dictionary of its kind to employ a comprehensive compound index. Any compound, however complicated, may be found using any one of its component characters. Entries are arranged according to a radical-based lookup system, similar to that used in most other dictionaries, but the comprehensive on-kun radical index and radical "overview list" provide easy and efficient alternatives.
The strength of this reference work remains its emphasis on kanji compounds and the inclusion of commonly-used expressions among the more than 47,000 entries in the main text. The inclusion of newly coined terms, particularly those in innovative technical fields, is another key feature of this revised edition.
Integral additions to the text include extensive index lists detailing some of the more complicated and frequently-used aspects of Japanese language and structure: counters for objects, frequently-used family and given names, geographical place names and terms, and terms related to business and governmental organizations.
Mark Spahn resides in the United States, where he works as a technical translator and consultant. His background is in mathematics, engineering, and computer science, and he worked in Japan formerly as a teacher, writer, and translator. His previous publications include Kanji and Kana and Japanese. Step 1-3.
Wolfgang Hadamitzky is librarian of the East Asia section of the Berlin State Library. He has worked in Oslo and Tokyo on the staff of the German Cultural Institute and is the author or co-author of several books and articles on the Japanese language, including Kanji and Kana and Japanese. Step 1-3.
