Jō and ge on books

Kan (巻) is the usual Japanese counter for volumes of a book or reference. If there are two volumes, they are labelled jōkan (上巻) or just jō (上) for the first volume, and gekan (下巻) or just ge (下) for the second. If there are three volumes, they are labelled jō (上), chū (中) and ge (下). Four or more volumes, as is common with manga, are labelled using numbers.
