Japanese education system

A toy for teaching Japanese children the correct way to write hiragana and katakana
The Japanese education system teaches children reading and writing in the following order:
  • Children begin learning reading and writing at the age of six. Hiragana and katakana are taught during the first year of elementary school (shōgakkō).
  • 1006 kanji, the kyōiku kanji are taught over six years of elementary school, divided into six one year grades containing 100-200 characters each.
  • The rest of the Jōyō and jinmeiyō kanji are taught at middle or high school level.
  • Further non-jōyō kanji are learnt at high school level.
  • There is no set list of grades for how to teach the jōyō kanji of middle school or high school. The list of grades for elementary school can be found in most kanji learning books or kanji dictionaries. However, note that it is adjusted regularly, so please find an up-to-date reference.
