Particles

Japanese has a lot of particles, short words which come after other words to indicate the way a word is used.

The particle no indicates possession: Watashi no bōshi means "My hat". The particle ga indicates the subject of a sentence: Heya ga atsui means "This room is hot". Similarly the particle o, written as wo (を), indicates the object of the sentence: shio o kudasai "Please give me the salt".
