Transitive and intransitive verbs

Japanese has a large variety of related pairs of transitive (take a direct object) and intransitive (do not take a direct object) verbs, such as hajimaru (to begin) and hajimeru (to begin). For example, :Jugyō ga hajimaru. means "The class starts." and :Sensei ga jugyō o hajimeru. means "The teacher starts the class." However, :{{badjapanese|Jugyō ga hajimeru.}} is wrong, since jugyō, "the class" is the subject, marked by the particle ga. Similarly, :{{badjapanese|Sensei ga jugyō o hajimaru.}} is wrong because jugyō is the object, marked by the particle o, and the intransitive verb hajimaru does not take an object.

There are many other pairs these types of verb, for example ochiru, "to fall", and otosu, "to drop".

The Japanese names for these two types of verb are jidoushi (自動詞) for intransitive, and tadoushi (他動詞) for transitive.

The following tables list commonly occuring pairs of transitive and intransitive verbs grouped by spelling patterns.

eru-aru pairs

Please note that azukeru (預ける) and azukaru (預かる) are not a transitive/intransitive pair; both verbs are transitive.
