The text used in my Japanese course at university. Very expensive. Uses kanji right from the start. I'm not sure whether the book really goes into enough detail to be understandable to the average student.
Review of An Introduction to Modern Japanese series by Stephen Poprocki
When I started learning Japanese, I borrowed every textbook available through interlibrary loan (about a dozen). This one stands out clearly as the best, though I haven't had a chance to see the Genki series which is supposedly pretty good too. The thing about this book is that it is very difficult. But, that is a good thing, because it means you will understand the intricacies of the grammar better. I also highly recommend the second book with exercises. It also has the vocabulary introduced in each lesson in the grammar book. The exercises are not simple rote memorization drills. They actually require you to think and use the grammar in new ways which don't follow an example from the book directly. Thus, it is extremely helpful if you can have someone check answers. After completing this book you will have mastered around 2500 words and 900 kanji. Then you are ready to buy the sequel "Cambridge Intermediate Japanese" by the same authors. This book references the grammar in An Introduction to Modern Japanese and is the best book for intermediate students that I know of.
