List of kanji by elementary school grade

This page lists the kanji taught to children at Japanese elementary schools. The kanji in the list are given in tables by grade. Within each grade, the kanji are ordered by the number of strokes.

Changes to the grade list

1992

In 1992, twenty characters, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and were added to the list, and ten, , , , , , , , , , and , removed.

2020

In 2020, the number of Kyōiku Kanji was increased from 1,006 to 1,026. Twenty additional kanji were added to the 4th grade set: , , , , , , , , , , , 鹿, , , , , , , , and . (As can be seen, many occur in the names of prefectures.)[1]

Thirty-two kanji were moved between grades: and were moved from grade 4 to grade 6, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and , were moved from grade 4 to grade 5, and , , , , , 退, , and were moved from grade 5 to grade 6.
